=== What does "Independent" mean? ===
Grifkuba is an independent host of independent wikis, however an unavoidable truth is that Grifkuba is an organization, and we do host wikis at scale for economic reasons. This leaves the first and by far most important question of why Grifkuba operates, how we view independence.

Behind the scenes, wikis are hard to run, especially when you go it alone. While most people can set up a functioning site within a few hours, it takes days of tireless research and work to create a reliable site which can handle millions of connections a month. This makes it seriously difficult for an independent wiki to be truly independent. Larger sites can manage it,
since they might have the donation base, or the traffic required to sustain advertisements. For smaller communities, however, most look to join with a hosting provider which is willing to offer a wiki for free.

What Grikfuba offers is such a provider which can provide quality, individualized sites, without charging money to that community, and without explicit vendor lock-in. To our knowledge, there is no other hosting provider, specializing in wikis, which offers this exact combination.

==== Individualized sites ====

With few exceptions, every single wiki hosted by Grifkuba has its own domain, and is fully capable of functioning as its own site. While Grifkuba holds and pays for most of these domains, we also operate wikis where the domains are held by the community.

Grifkuba also mandates no stylistic control. While we often can't maintain custom skins, we are fully able and willing to support their use. We work with each site's community directly, and as much as we can, and try to provide help with small modifications to site CSS.

While our specialization is with MediaWiki, we are always open to the wants of our communities and, when possible and practical for us, are willing to explore new ideas, and different types of web software and hosting.
